BCD alums, friends reunite at reception

Alumni Association President Scott Waugh

More than 130 BCD alumni, their spouses, faculty and friends shared laughs, became reacquainted and reminisced Jan. 11 at a reception hosted by the BCD Alumni Association during the Southwest Dental Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas. The reception also served as the official kick-off for the Betty J. Scott Scholarship Fund drive.

Dr. W. Scott Waugh (BCD '74), president of the Alumni Association, opened a series of brief remarks by Dr. James S. Cole (BCD '75), BCD dean; Betty J. Scott, a former BCD registrar; and Robert J. Bigham, president of the Baylor Oral Health Foundation.

During his remarks, Waugh announced that the association has secured 80 tickets to the popular Broadway musical The Lion King, appearing at Dallas' Music Hall this fall. (More information on purchasing tickets through the association will be provided by the Office of Student & Alumni Services this spring.) Dr. Waugh also

announced that the Alumni Association will celebrate homecoming Sept. 20 to 22. Waugh closed his comments by endorsing the association and foundation's commitment to the Scott scholarship fund, initiated a few years ago by Dr. William Forrest (BCD '62) through a contribution to the foundation. Waugh also presented Bigham with a check toward the scholarship.

Scott, who touched the lives of more than 5,500 dental and dental hygiene alumni during her 32-year tenure at BCD, was lauded by Waugh, Bigham and Cole during their comments.  "What people remember about Betty is that she cares for people," said Cole, as he introduced her to the enthusiastic crowd. "She was great for the institution, great for the students and great for the profession."

Her commitment to BCD and desire to help the association's fund-raising efforts for the scholarship reach an endowment goal of $500,000 was evident in her remarks. "I feel like I owe so much to BCD," said Scott. "I would love to see this scholarship succeed.

"I am truly honored," she continued. "Thank you all for what you've meant to me."

Contributions to the Betty J. Scott Scholarship Fund can be made to the Baylor Oral Health Foundation; 3600 Gaston Avenue, Suite 1151, LB90; Dallas, Texas 75246.
