Biomaterials Science

Presentations: Dr. Toru Okabe gave a presentation Nov. 6 to the graduate students of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida-Gainesville. He discussed the titanium research being performed at Baylor College of Dentistry. As a Ph.D. graduate of that department, Okabe joins other alumni who have been invited to speak to current students.

Okabe was invited to speak at the Research Seminar Series of the New York University College of Dentistry Nov. 27. His topic was titanium casting for dentistry.

Other News: Drs. Jason Griggs and Barbara Miller attended the Academy of Dental Materials' annual meeting in Siena, Italy, Oct. 25-27. The meeting's focus was "Scientific Criteria for Selecting Materials and Techniques in Clinical Dentistry."

Dr. Ikuya Watanabe attended the American College of Prosthodontics' annual sesson in New Orleans Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

Biomedical Sciences

Presentations: Dr. Larry L. Bellinger presented "The Dorsomedial Hypothalamic Nucleus (DMN): Its Re-emerging Importance in the Control of Feeding Behavior" to the Neuroscience Group at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, Oct. 24.

He presented "The Effects of Intermittent Nicotine (NIC) Administration on Meal Patterns in Male Rats" at the Society for Neuroscience's 31st annual meeting in San Diego, Calif., Nov. 10-15. Co-authors are P.J. Wellman and A. Cepeda-Benito.

While there, he also attended an editorial board meeting for the Journal of Physiology and Behavior in his capacity as a board member.

Clinical Services

Publication: Hasegawa TK, Matthews M, Gutmann M. Ethical issues of domestic violence. Texas Dental Journal 118(10):988-992, 2001.

Other News: Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa Jr. chaired the American College of Dentists' Ethics Committee meeting on Oct. 13 in Kansas City.

Hasegawa was joined by Dale Christensen, Scott Frederick, Dr. Thomas McKinney and Dr. Margaret Yanus when he traveled to three dental schools to review their dental simulation laboratories Oct. 29-30. The team visited the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Each participated in the review based on their responsibilities in various Baylor College of Dentistry activities. Hasegawa chairs the Facilities Development Advisory Committee. Yanus is the simulation laboratory project coordinator. Christensen, Frederick and McKinney are members of the Information Technology Classroom Design Advisory Committee.

Diagnostic Sciences

Presentations: Dr. E. James Cundiff II presented "Review of Oral Pathology" as part of a two-day course for dentists preparing for the Academy of General Dentistry fellowship examination in Dallas Oct. 13.

He also presented "Oral Cancer Examination and Diagnosis" to the Texoma Dental Society in Sherman, Texas, Oct. 29.

On Nov. 9, Cundiff presented a half-day course, "Early Detection of Oral Cancer," to the First District Dental Society in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

Dr. Neil L. Frederiksen presented a review course on oral radiology for the Dallas Academy of General Dentistry in October.

Drs. Hui Liang, Byron W. Benson and Fredericksen presented "Lingual Vascular Canals of the Mandible: Evaluation with Conventional Tomography" during the AAOMR's annual session.

Dr. Raghunath Puttaiah was invited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures to be a panel member in the Second Global Summit on Infection Control in New York Nov. 29-30. He presented "Needs Assessment Data on Dental Infection Control," which he had collected from various developing countries.

Dr. John M. Wright presented the keynote address titled "Challenging Cases in Oral Pathology and Medicine" at the Association of Oral Pathologists-Taiwan's annual meeting in Taipei Nov. 3.

While in Taiwan, he also lectured to faculty and students at Kaohsiung Medical University, China Medical College, Yang-Ming Medical University and the National Taiwan Medical University.

Other News: Benson attended American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology's annual session in Portland, Ore., Oct. 2-7. While there, he stepped down as president of the organization after serving in that capacity for two years.

Just prior to the meeting, Benson observed the administration of the certifying examination of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Frederiksen attended the annual meeting of the directors of both ABOMR and AAOMR in Portland Sept. 30-Oct. 6. He is president of the board.

He also attended the fall meeting of the American Dental Association's Standards Committee on Dental Inforamatics in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 9-12. He chairs the committee's Subcommittee 12 - Inforamatic Component Interoperability in Dentistry.

Information Technology Services

Dr. Emet Schneiderman presented "Privacy and Security of Electronic Patient Information in the U.S. - The New HIPAA Law" at the Soredex Digital Advisory Group's annual meeting in Helsinki, Finland, Oct. 21.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology

Presentations: Dr. Roger E. Alexander presented "Automated External Defibrillators in Dental Practice Emergencies" to the Grand Prairie Dental Study Club in Grand Prairie, Texas, Nov. 7. 

He spoke to the North Texas Periodontics and Implantology Study Club of Plano, Texas, on "Pathogens of Concern in the Dental Office: Overview & Update" Nov. 14.

On Nov. 20, Alexander presented "Automated External Defibrillators: Should You or Shouldn't You?" to the Arlington Dental Study Club in Arlington, Texas.

Dr. Pedro F. Franco attended the 25th Annual Congress of the Colombia Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Cartagena, Colombia, Nov. 3-4. He made presentations in Zygoma implants and the Novum Brånemark Implant System.

On Nov. 9, Franco taught a minicourse in TMJ surgery on surgical disc repositioning using the Mitek anchor. He made the presentation to graduate students of the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Hospital Universitario San Ignacio in Bogota, Colombia.

While there, he presided at one OMS student's master's thesis defense Nov. 14. He has been mentoring the student research project on substance P levels in the retrodiscal hyperplastic tissue in patients with degenerative TMJ disease.

Franco made three presentations at the Annual Symposium in Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery at the Universidad Santo Tomás Orthodontics Graduate Program in Bucaramanga, Colombia, Nov. 16-17. His titles were "Techniques in Orthognathic Surgery," "Idiopathic Condylar Resorption" and "Surgical Techniques for TMJ Disorders."

He returned to Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Nov. 23 to present "Idiopathic Condylar Resorption and its Importance After Orthognathic Surgery" to its orthodontics program.

Dr. Uwe Frohberg also presented at the CAOMS congress. His topics included immediate implant placement, bone grafting techniques, correction of facial deformities, myocutaneous flaps for head and neck reconstruction, and facial esthetic surgery.

Dr. Carlos A. Morales-Ryan made four presentations at the 10th Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Congress sponsored by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon Departamento de Cirugia Oral y Maxilofacial in Monterrey, Mexico, Oct. 19-20. His topics were "Evaluation and Treatment Planning for the Surgical-Orthodontic Patient," "TMJ and Orthognathic Surgery," "Co-adjuvants in Orthognathic Surgery" and "Surgical Treatment in Patients with Craniomaxillofacial Malformations."

Dr. Stephen M. Parel spoke on the Brånemark Novum System at the American College of Prosthodontics' annual meeting in New Orleans Nov. 3.

On Nov. 8, he talked to the Dallas Dental Hygienists' Society on "Implant Innovations in Compromised Patient Care."

Parel traveled to Santiago, Chile, Nov. 12-13 for a meeting of the Chilean Academy of Osseointegration. He made two presentations, "Complications and Compromises" and "Current Concepts."

Dr. Sterling R. Schow and Parel lectured on the Novum Implant System at the Nobel Biocare Training Institute in Yorba Linda, Calif., in October. Parel also presented material on the Zygoma Implant System.

Dr. R. Gilbert Triplett attended the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology in Philadelphia Oct. 6-10. While there, he presented a continuing education course titled "Implants and Regenerated Bone: Oral Surgery and Periodontal Perspectives."

Triplett  lectured on Zygoma implants and the Novum same-day teeth procedure at the North Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery meeting in Charleston, S.C., Oct. 13-14.

Orthodontics

Presentations: Dr. Rolf Behrents was a featured speaker at the Diamond Anniversary Commemorative Meeting of the Japanese Orthodontic Society in Tokyo Oct. 8-11. His lecture was titled "Postgraduate Education in Orthodontics in the U.S.: Change and Challenge."

While in Japan, he presented "Orthodontic Complication and Failure" at the inaugural meeting of the Orthodontic Alumni Association of Tokyo Medical and Dental University Oct. 11.

Periodontics

Presentation: Dr. David G. Kerns presented a two-day seminar titled "Regenerative Therapies" to first-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents at Fort Sill, Okla., in October.

Other News: Several faculty members and graduate students from the department attended the American Academy of Periodontology's annual meeting in Philadelphia Oct. 5-10.

The department welcomes three new faculty members. Drs. Deborah Foyle and Bettye Whiteaker joined the department on a part-time basis. Foyle is an assistant professor in undergraduate periodontics and Whiteaker is clinical assistant professor in graduate periodontics.

 The new director of postdoctoral periodontics is Dr. David G. Kerns, also an associate professor. He hails from Charlotte, N.C.

Kerns completed his dental education at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine and the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He also completed residencies in general practice as well as in periodontics. He has taught and lectured extensively in advanced education in general dentistry, orthodontics and periodontics both in the United States and abroad.

His wife, Dr. Lisa Kerns, is an orthodontist. They are the proud parents of Cole, who is almost 4 years old.

Public Health Sciences

Presentations: Dr. Daniel L. Jones presented "Nicotine Cessation" to Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas, Oct. 26. He made the same presentation at Wharton County College in Wharton, Texas, Nov. 2.

Dr. K. Vendrell Rankin and Jones presented "Clinical Update on Tobacco and Oral Health" at the Wolf Cancer Symposium in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 8. They also made the presentation for Baylor College of Dentistry's Department of Continuing Education Nov. 16.

Other News: Rita Hernandez has joined the department as a project coordinator. She divides her time between the Dallas County Sealant Initiative and the Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center's dental clinic.

Dr. Lavern Holyfield, Jones and Rankin attended the Texas Cancer Council Project's directors' meeting in Austin, Texas, Nov. 11-12. They represented the Dental Oncology Education Program and the Spit Tobacco Prevention Network, both of which are TCC-funded projects.

Rankin attended the Tobacco Control Committee and Health Science Advisory meetings during the American Cancer Society's Texas Division board meeting in Austin Oct. 3-4.

She also attended the Executive Council meeting and served as a program moderator during the American Association for Cancer Education's annual meeting in Los Angeles in October.

Student Development

Sheryl Hornback and Dr. Marvin Hirsh led a Welcoming Diversity Workshop for the Dallas County Dental Society's leadership class and staff Nov. 15.
