ADS sponsors Children's Sealant Day

More than 430 teeth were sealed during the Children's Sealant Day sponsored by the Asian-American Dental Society at Baylor College of Dentistry Nov. 3. Supported by the college's pediatric dentistry and public health sciences departments, the free program helped 107 children, all of whom received prophylaxis as well.

assistant professor of public health sciences; Dr. Stephen Griffin (BCD '85), assistant professor of restorative sciences; Dr Maiara Hister (BCD '98-AEGD), assistant professor of restorative sciences; and Dr. Loulou Moore (BCD '93, '94), assistant professor of restorative sciences and ADS faculty adviser. Dana Ly (D4), ADS community service officer, coordinated the event.

"The students were very efficient, focused and treated our young patients in a most caring and professional way," said Moore. "I am very, very proud of them."

In addition to BCD students and faculty, Dr. Eric Huynh (BCD '94) brought gift packages to all participants, patients, student volunteers and faculty members. He also helped oversee the dental students when needed.

Another highlight was "Kitty the Clown," portrayed by BCD's own Kitty Trammell, clinical accounting clerk in clinical services. "She gave our patients hours and hours of entertainment," Moore said.
 


BCD students take programs to metroplex schools

The Department of Public Health Sciences' Community Connections initiative provided outreach programs and services in 12 Texas cities during October and November.

Third-year dental students made Tooth Talk presentations to students at 17 area schools. By the Roots was presented to children at 10 elementary schools.

Dental and dental hygiene students provided dental exams, oral cancer screenings and dental health education at 23 health fairs. Approximately 11,500 people participated in these events. 

Supervising dentists included Dr. Kent Boozer (BCD '00), teaching assistant in pediatric dentistry; Dr. Ana Gonzales Casafont (BCD '01-AEGD), instructor in advanced education in general dentistry; Dr. T.C. Lyon, professor emeritus of public health sciences; Dr. Loulou Moore (BCD '93, '94), assistant professor of restorative sciences; Dr. John Nelson, retired associate dean for clinical services; and Dr. Kenny Thompson (BCD '00), teaching assistant in pediatric dentistry.
