BCD in the News

On Air

Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:

  • "The Best Check-up" featuring Dr. Gary Solomon (BCD '76). How do you know if you're getting the best check-up at the dentist? You may think a dental check-up identifies mostly cavities. However, a complete dental exam can identify many other potential problems.
  • "Childhood Gum Disease" featuring Dr. Paul Ezzo (BCD '93). Scientists have linked gum disease in childhood with an immune disorder. In a new study, researchers think they may have found an explanation for early aggressive gum infections found in one out of 300 children or teens.
  • "Cosmetics for Kids" featuring Dr. Bob Morgan (BCD '78). One of the newest cosmetic trends in dentistry is false baby teeth for young children. Dentists can create pediatric dentures for kids who suffer traumatic tooth loss before their permanent teeth come in.
  • "Halloween Cavities" featuring Morgan. Trick or treaters celebrate Halloween by collecting bags of treats that can lead to a future trip to the dentist. Not all candy is created equal when it comes to cavities. Some types of treats are more tooth friendly than others.
  • "Misaligned Bite" featuring Solomon. In these stressful times, are you clenching or grinding your teeth?  If so, you may be causing major damage by knocking your teeth out of alignment.
  • "New Fluoride Tablets" featuring Dr. Craig Ruben. New evidence suggests fluoride plays a critical role in both tooth and bone health. A new fluoride tablet could be approved by the FDA to fight against osteoporosis much like fluoride toothpastes fight cavities.
  • "Ortho Cavity Attack" featuring Dr. Jeryl English (BCD). Orthodontists have launched a new attack on cavities. When children and adults get braces, the biggest battle often becomes tooth decay - not straight teeth.
  • "Sealants Save Money" featuring Dr. Larry Herwig (BCD '84). Research has shown dental sealants prevent cavities and save parents money. The investment in prevention pays dividends in both improved oral health and lower dental bills.
