History-making justice speaks at college

Baylor College of Dentistry will host Justice Carolyn Wright at noon Feb. 6 in Room 605. The Student National Dental Association is coordinating the event in celebration of Black History Month. Wright's one-hour presentation titled "Family Matters" is open to all faculty, staff and students.  Lunch is being provided by the United States Navy.

Wright is one of 13 justices on the Texas Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas. She sits on a panel of three justices who

decide criminal, civil, family, juvenile and probate matters that are appealed from the trial courts in seven counties. Her election to the court marks the first time in Texas history that an African-American woman has ever won a multi-county election for any elected office.

Wright has served in the judiciary for 17 years, previously serving as an elected State District judge and an appointed associate judge in the Family District Court. Prior to her judicial service, she engaged in the private practice of law and worked in a law-related field designing alternative programs to youth incarceration.  Wright is active in several professional and civic organizations, and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. She graduated from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.

"BCD is pleased and proud to welcome a person of Justice Wright's distinction to the college,"  said Erika Charles, president of SNDA. "I encourage everyone to attend."
