Holiday helpers make a difference
Baylor College of Dentistry faculty, staff and students made the holidays a little brighter for many Dallas families.

A spur-of-the-moment effort just prior to the Thanksgiving break yielded more than 250 pounds of food for the Salvation Army. BCD well-wishers contributed more than 200 cans of food, several boxes and packages of nonperishable items, two frozen turkeys and three generous cash gifts.

Coordinated by Cindy Ceen, assistant dean for administration, the food drive was

prompted by an article in the Nov. 19 edition of The Dallas Morning News about the urgent need to feed the hungry in the Dallas community. The Salvation Army also was the beneficiary of the BCD Employee Activity Organization's food and coat drive in December. Coordinated by Sara Wartes, administrative coordinator in the Dean's Office, the drive brought in 20 coats, 50 food items and $25 in cash.

Christmas was a little brighter for 75 children, thanks to the generosity of those at BCD who filled the children's wishes with new toys and clothing. All of the wish cards provided to the college were selected, thus fulfilling 100 percent of BCD's commitment to the program.

Since 1987, the college has participated in the Spirit of Christmas program that benefits children under the care of Dallas County Child Protective Services/Community Partners. Sponsored by Bank One, the program was coordinated internally by Lori Dees, administrative projects coordinator in communications and development.

The Student National Dental Association sponsored a needy family with six children during the holidays. The group collected 80 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishable foods as well as toiletries and $40 in cash for the family.

Erika Charles (D3), SNDA president, and Talya Young (D3), SNDA treasurer, coordinated the effort. Dr. Larry Freeman, clinical associate professor of general dentistry, is the group's faculty adviser.

The BCD chapter of Psi Omega, a national dental fraternity, sponsored a Christmas toy drive benefiting needy children in the Dental Health Program clinics. Mary Tran (D3) is the fraternity's president and Dr. Wayne Woods (BCD '88), assistant professor of restorative sciences, is its faculty adviser.
