New BCD lab shines during open house
Baylor College of Dentistry's new Dental Simulation Laboratory gleamed during its open house reception Jan. 10. Although the lab opened for student use in August, the open house was the
first opportunity since the ribbon-cutting ceremony for faculty, staff and students to tour the facility.
Dr. Thomas McKinney (BCD '68), associate professor of restorative sciences, and Dr. Margaret Yanus, DSL director and assistant professor of restorative sciences,
provided demonstrations of the lab's state-of-the-art elements. The first of its kind in Texas, the lab features 100 simulation units where second-year dental students learn
and practice preclinical techniques. This hands-on environment simulates varied aspects of patient treatment, preparing the students to work with real patients at the conclusion
of the academic year. In addition, the lab has interdisciplinary capabilities along with opportunities for conducting continuing education courses.
The lab was funded through generous grants from the
Baylor Oral Health Foundation and the Hillcrest Foundation, founded by Mrs. W.W. Caruth Sr. For more information, see "BCD's new lab premieres in August" in the September 2002 issue of the Baylor
Dental Record Online.
