"Research on Laser Welding Has Started at Baylor College of Dentistry" during the 5th Dental Laser Processing Forum at the Kyoto College of Dental Hygienists and Technicians in Kyoto, Japan, Dec. 1. Organized by
Selec Co. Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, the forum is held every six months at a different location in Japan. It provides dentists, researchers and dental technicians an opportunity to share information about different applications of laser
welding and procedures to use when working with dental lasers for welding titanium, cobalt-chromium, gold and other suitable dental alloys. The Department of Biomaterials Science bought a dental laser welder from Selec in fall
2001. Experiments are being planned to test various aspects of the welding of titanium alloys and several other dental alloys. In addition, the laser welder has been used in a few special cases in the fixed prosthodontics area of
the Department of Restorative Sciences. Biomedical Sciences Presentations:
Dr. Edward G. Miller presented "Citrus Limonoids: Increasing Importance to Human Health" at the International Conference and Exhibition on Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods in Portland, Ore., Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Co-authors are Dr. Samuel E. Taylor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology, Dr. Bhimu Patil at the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center in Weslaco, Texas, and Dr. Shin Hasegawa at the U. S. Department of Agriculture in Albany, Calif.
Miller and Hasegawa also were co-authors on a second presentation given by Patil, which was titled "HPLC Analysis of Citrus Limonoids in the Lower Gastrointestinal Tract Microorganisms Culture Media Using Solid Phase Extraction."

In January, several faculty members presented eat-and-learn luncheon topics at the Southwest Dental Conference in Dallas. Presenting were:
- Marylou Gutmann: "Recognition, Documentation and Reporting of Domestic Abuse";
- Lisa Harper: "Oral Health and Nutrition";
- Glenna Johns: "The Dental Hygiene Management of the Anxious Patient"; and
- Kathy Muzzin: "Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity."
Two of the department's recent master's degree graduates also presented, including:
- Dianna Prachyl: "Dental Hygiene Treatment of the Patient with Hemophilia"; and
- JoAnn Scofield: "The Chemically Dependent Dental Patient."
Tracy King, a current graduate student, presented "Dental Aerosols and the Potential Health Hazard to the Dental Hygienist."
Diagnostic Sciences Presentations:
Dr. Byron W. Benson presented a continuing dental education course titled "Digital Radiography - Fact and Fiction: An Update for the Dental Practitioner." The full-day program took place at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple, Texas, Dec. 7.
He also presented a CE program during the Rear Admiral William Vaughn Memorial Naval Reserve Dental Seminar in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 20. The program was titled "Patient Selection Criteria in Dental Radiography."
The seminar was sponsored by the Naval Reserve Readiness Command South at NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. Benson is a captain in the Naval Reserve. Drs. Neil L. Frederiksen and Hui Liang presented a lecture and participation
course, "Perfecting Radiographic Techniques," at the Southwest Dental Conference in January. Other News:

by the American Academy of Periodontology in Chicago Dec. 4-5. He is the reviewer for the AAP's section on Physical and Mechanical Local Anti-infective Approaches to Treating Periodontal Disease. Rees and Dr. Nancy Burkhart hosted an online lichen planus discussion session Dec. 19. The guest was Dr. Bernard McCartan, researcher and oral medicine consultant at Trinity College
