Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during
WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen
(BCD), the report's recent topics include:
- "Crooked Bottoms" featuring Dr. Dale Greer (BCD '77) and Dr. Reginald Taylor
(BCD). Many dental patients in the baby boom generation are noticing the common problem of crooked bottom teeth. How does it happen and what can be done to correct it?
- "Dental Resolution" featuring Dr. Celeste Latham (BCD '97). Your dentist may provide you with an incentive to stop smoking. It's the threat of losing your teeth.
- "Difficult Bleaching" featuring Greer. Many dentists are offering teeth bleaching specials, but patients should know that some teeth are more difficult to bleach than others.
- "New Clench Devices" featuring Dr. James Clayton
(BCD '66). Clenching your teeth has been linked to headaches. Dentists are treating the problem by prescribing new devices that prevent clenching altogether, especially at night
.
- "Prenatal Vitamins" featuring Dr. David Genecov and Dr. Lynne Opperman
(BCD). New research connects low levels of folate or folic acid with oral cleft defects. Clefts develop very early, so if you are planning to become pregnant, you should be taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid and B-12 now.
- "Sterilizing Bugs" featuring Dr. Anna Willison (BCD '94) and Dr. Tammy Weyandt
(BCD '98). During the cold and flu season, how do dentists know their instruments are clean and sterile? One way is by subscribing to a sterilization monitoring service.
