(D3) plan to walk 60 miles from Fort Worth to Dallas during the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, a nationwide fund-raiser to benefit breast
cancer-related research and services. Its goal is to improve access to quality breast care for medically underserved women. The students are hoping that others from BCD will join their team, "Team Fern,"
in its efforts to raise $4,000. They named their team in memory of Layman's mother-in-law, Fern Elain Layman, who died in 1991 after developing breast cancer. Fillman is walking in support of her friend and
classmate Stacey and in honor of her great-grandmother Lois Higgins and family friend Patsy Fisher.
"I have seen firsthand how such a tragedy affects more than just the victim," said Layman. "I am
motivated to help prevent anyone else from experiencing such a devastating event."
Both Layman and Fillman encourage others to join them. "The more we can do to raise awareness of the importance of early
detection and the critical number of women who need medical care, screening, education and treatment, but don't have access to it – the better it will be," said Layman.
