Baylor College of Dentistry joined other components of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center to recognize the first Texas State Employee Health and Fitness Day in June. The
initiative will be an annual event sponsored by Eduardo Sanchez, Texas Commissioner of Health.
Dr. Nancy W. Dickey,
HSC president, challenged HSC faculty and staff to participate in the event by introducing "Walk to El Paso," a team competition to encourage people to walk, jog or ride a bicycle during July, August and September. The program was designed to provide employees the opportunity to engage in physical activities that would motivate them to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
HSC personnel responded with 47 teams, 17 of which were from BCD. Each team logged its walking, jogging or bicycle mileage from July 1 to Sept. 30, with a goal of walking more than 654 miles
(the distance from Bryan, Texas, to El Paso, Texas).
Dr. Eric Solomon,
executive director of institutional research, earned the highest individual score of 256 miles (64 hours) by walking, swimming and doing aerobics. The following BCD teams exceeded the 654-mile goal:

Fitness Fireballs members are Brad Crump, Bill Hallmon, David Kerns, Tom Stanford, Jan Steele and Melissa Tricamo.
Dean's Team members are Cindy Ceen, Loulou Moore, Janet Reinwald, Solomon, Sara Wartes and Lanelle Watkins.
Restore Fitness members are Mark Gannaway, Steve Griffin, Maiara Hister, Steve Karbowski, Mike McWatters and Bill Pope.
The Misfits members are Larry Bellinger, Campbell Bourland, Carolyn Kerins, Phillip Kramer, Steve Lin and Edward Miller.
Fit for Anything members are Lisa Cheng, Frances Espinosa, Harvey Kessler, Amp Miller, Barbara Miller and Jeff Seibert.
Scaling New Heights members are Egor Fuksman, Leigh Ann Gonzalez, Marylou Gutmann, Lisa Harper, Pamela Hines and Keri Pearson.
Fiscal Fitness members are Marty Baylor, John Clark, Frank Kile, Gail Parrigin-Clark, Tom Sullivan and Eddie Victorino.
Fit Me In members are Carmen Banks, Ernie Brooks, Dale Christensen, Tamara Gravely, Jack Long and Reginald Taylor.
Team Dynamo members are David Carlson, Paul Dechow, Bob Hinton, Pascal Mbiene, Lynne Opperman and Kathy Svoboda.
Technically Fit members are Jody Brutto, Roseanna Caldwell, Carmina Castro, Rob Grant, Jeff Lowry and Emet Schneiderman.
