The 2002 Open-Wide Open Golf Tournament was a big success
despite poor weather conditions Nov. 2. Hosted by the Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association and the Dallas County Dental Society, the event raised more than $8,000. Proceeds will
support the DCDS Foundation's access to care initiatives in the coming year.
Almost 100 DCDS members and BCD alumni, faculty and students participated in the eighth annual tournament at Castle Hills Golf Club in Lewisville, Texas. Special prizes
went to Abhay Mali for the longest putt, John Roberts (D2) for closest to the pin, and Houston Tuel (D3) for the longest drive.
The winning team included Dr. Greg Duncan (BCD '87), Dr. David Grattafiori and Dr. Greg Grave. Second place honors went to Field Harrison, Custis Hoge, Dr. David Hildebrand
(BCD '69) and Dr. Kevin Seidler ( BCD '78). The third place team was Dr. Jason Havard (BCD '02), Mike Lewis (D4), Jason Miller (D4) and Dr. Jimmy Wallingford
(BCD '02).
Corporate and private sponsorships contribute to the tournament's success each year. Dentsply International was the lead sponsor. Straumann sponsored the buffet luncheon,
which was enjoyed by the chilled, soggy players. Players also received embroidered caps that were sponsored in part by Procter & Gamble. The Baylor Oral Health
Foundation sponsored the refreshment cart.
Because of the popularity of the course, next year's Open-Wide Open will be played at Castle Hills on Oct. 18. Proceeds from that tournament will support the Betty J. Scott
Scholarship Fund at Baylor College of Dentistry. Scott, who is retired and living in Mesquite, Texas, was the registrar at BCD for more than 32 years. The BCD Alumni
Association is working in conjunction with the Baylor Oral Health Foundation to build the corpus of the scholarship fund.
