Presentations: Dr. Jason Griggs chaired the oral session, "Adhesion to Metal and Ceramic Substrates," at the 81st General Session of the International Association for Dental Research in Göteborg, Sweden, June 25-28. In addition, the following presentations were made:
Griggs gave an invited presentation to the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials at the University of Texas Houston – Dental Branch in Houston July 11. The title was "Applications of the Finite Element Method in Dental Research." Publication: Sadeq A, Cai Z, Woody RD, Miller AW. Other News: Griggs hosted Dr. Vladimir Sinyayev for a week in June. Sinyayev is from the Laboratory of Inorganic Material Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Sciences, Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, Almaty, Kazakhstan. His research specialty is inorganic chemistry. Griggs and Sinyayev are researching porous calcium-magnesium phosphates. Griggs is a foreign collaborator on Sinyayev's grant, "Calcium Phosphate Bioceramics from Calcium Olygophosphates." Dr. Toru Okabe attended the 10th World Conference on Titanium held in Hamburg, Germany, July 13-18. He is co-author of a presentation titled "Dental casting of Ti-Cr-Cu alloys." Other co-authors are M. Koike, L. Guo, L. Carrascon, M. Brezner, Z. Cai, M. Ito and O. Okuno. Biomedical Sciences Publications: Kerins CA, McIntosh JE, Carlson DS, Bellinger LL. Note: As the first National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Predoctoral Dental Scientist Fellowship student in the nation, Dr. Carolyn Kerins is completing her Ph.D. studies with her mentor, Dr. Larry L. Bellinger. This publication is one of several that have come as the result of her work. Nouri-Shirazi M, Guinet E. Evidence for the immunosuppressive role of nicotine on human dendritic cell functions. Immunology 109(3):365-373, 2003. Clinical Services Presentation: Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa and philosopher Dr. David Ozar presented the Fourth Summer Intensive Workshop by the Professional Ethics in Dentistry Network. The workshop, "Appropriate Outcomes and Effective Teaching in Dental Ethics," took place at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., July 30-31. The workshop was a pre-session for the 5th International Congress of Dental Ethics and Law Society's meeting Aug. 1-3. Special Care Dentistry 23(1):22-27, 2003. Diagnostic Sciences Presentations: Dr. Byron W. Benson presented a continuing education program titled "Contemporary Imaging for Dental Implants" while attending the Ambulatory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course sponsored by the University of California at Los Angeles. He also participated in various discussion groups. The five-day course was held June 30-July 4 in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii. On July 18, Benson presented an all-day participation CE course titled "Digital Radiography: Are You Ready for It and Is It Ready for You?" at the annual session of the Academy of General Dentistry in Nashville, Tenn. The course was co-sponsored by AGD and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, with technical/software support from Dentsply/Gendex. Periodontics Presentations: Dr. Ibtisam Al-Hashimi was an invited speaker at the International Women's Club of Dallas. She presented "Your Teeth and Your Smile" April 22. Al-Hashimi attended the International Association for Dental Research meeting in Göteborg, Sweden, in June. She gave an oral presentation on a new diagnostic test for Sjögren's syndrome, chaired an oral session and represented the Salivary Research Group at the Program Chair meeting. Other News: The department congratulates Dr. Francisco Rivera-Hildalgo who organized "Technology Day – Updates in Clinical Dentistry: State of the Art and Science of Dentistry." The program was presented July 22 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The department invited Dr. Salvador Nares to speak to the department's faculty, residents and externs July 25. He presented "The Role of Genetics in Periodontics." A 2002 graduate of the BCD periodontics program, Nares is doing a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The department welcomes three dentists from South Korea who are participating in BCD's International One-Year Continuing Education Program in Periodontics. They are Dr. Hyun Tai Cho of Ulsan, Dr. Yong Gyu Lee of Cheun Chon and Dr. Dong Whan Shin of Taejeon. Drs. Nancy Burkhart and Terry Rees hosted a discussion session for the International Oral Lichen Planus Support Group Aug. 5. Special guests were: Dr. Russell Greenfield, medical director of Carolinas
Integrative Healthcare Organization in Charlotte, N.C., and visiting assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine; and Dr. Ross Kerr of the Department of Oral Medicine at New York
