Periodontics department hosts annual symposium, lectureship
Baylor College of Dentistry's Department of Periodontics hosted two annual events July 31-Aug. 2.
The International Periodontics Symposium was held July
31-Aug. 1. Dr. Francisco Rivera-Hidalgo, associate professor and director of research in periodontics, organized the event with the assistance of Carol Libby, administrative assistant I in periodontics.
Graduate programs in periodontics represented at the symposium in addition to BCD's included the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico; Universidad de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico;
Universidad de Panama, Ciudad de Panama in Panama City, Panama; and Universidad Quetzalcoatl in Irapuato, Mexico. About 60 residents and faculty members participated in the program.
Dr. Edmundo Martinez Gordillo, dean of the Universidad
Quetzalcoatl, presented a sculpture to Dr. James S. Cole (BCD '75), BCD dean, to commemorate the affiliation relationship between the university and BCD. The sculpture,
numbered and signed by artist Hector Pecollar, depicts the "Quetzal" (head of a snake) that symbolizes the university.
On Aug. 2, the department hosted the 32nd Arthur Merritt Memorial Lectureship featuring keynote speaker Dr. Louis F. Rose, professor of periodontics at the University of
Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia and the Department of Periodontics at New York University College of Dentistry in New York City.
Rose also maintains a private practice in periodontics and implant dentistry. A world-renowned author, speaker and innovative educator in the specialty of
periodontics, he has degrees in dentistry and medicine. Rose has published extensively in the areas of periodontics, implant dentistry and periodontal medicine.
