BCD students receive national scholarships

Baylor College of Dentistry dental students walked away with three of the four scholarships awarded by the Student National Dental Association during the National Dental Association's annual convention, held Aug. 1-6 in New Orleans.

Amber Callis (D2), Sonia Cartwright (D2) and Kelton Stewart (D2) each received the Darryl Hawkins Memorial Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement, dedication and commitment to the SNDA.

"I felt honored and privileged to know that among all my peers nationwide I was one of the few selected to win such a prestigious award," said Stewart.

The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Darryl Hawkins, a 1989 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University College of Dental Medicine, who was a leader in the SNDA and served as director of regional coordinators prior to his death in 1990 at age 27.

"I was very pleased and proud to learn that BCD students received three of the four scholarships that were awarded," said Reginald Taylor, associate professor in orthodontics and faculty advisor to BCD's SNDA chapter. "The receipt of these awards is an honor not only to the students who

received them, but also to the college. I want to give Kelton, Amber and Sonia my heartiest congratulations."

The scholarships were based on the students' academic record, their involvement with the SNDA and recommendations from dental faculty.

"The fact that our second-year SNDA members received three of four national scholarships speaks to the caliber of these students," said Ernie Brooks (BCD '94, '96), associate professor and director in student development and SNDA assistant faculty advisor. "They have proven themselves to be among the highest performing dental students in the country.  These students represent BCD very well, and I am honored to claim them our as students."
