Dental hygiene grads appear on 'Today'
When five recent dental hygiene graduates traveled to New York
City to celebrate their graduation, the country glimpsed their camaraderie – and their pride in Baylor College of Dentistry.
Ashlyn Chugg, Amanda Copeland, Cassie Epperson, Lila King and Joanne Martinez appeared on NBC's "Today" show on June 10. The 2003 graduates of BCD's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene
wore their college shirts to attract the attention of the camera and were featured between the show's segments.
"We woke up at 6 a.m. to wait in line to stand outside the show," said Martinez, who was class historian at the college. "We thought our BCD shirts would help us get on." They were right.
The women became fast friends during their studies at BCD. Each wanted to visit New York City, so they decided to celebrate graduation together.
"We've been through a lot together and our friendships will last a lifetime," Martinez said. "We have so many memories from school, but now New York is a place that will always remind us of our friends from
dental hygiene school."
In addition to the "Today" show, the friends enjoyed being tourists. They shopped, toured the sites, saw two Broadway shows, and gathered
celebrity autographs during the Tony Awards broadcast. "We also had to try New York pizza, cheesecake, pretzels .... yum!" Martinez said.
The women's camaraderie and enthusiasm did not surprise the dental hygiene faculty at BCD. "Leave it to them to come up with a way to get recognized by wearing their BCD shirts," said Dr. Janice DeWald
(BCD '95), professor of dental hygiene and director of the Caruth School. "They are a creative and innovative group of students – I mean, graduates."
