Journal of the American College of Dentists 69:23-30, 2002. Biomedical Sciences Dr. Robert Spears attended the Gordon Research Conference on Cell Death in Waterville, Maine, June 16-21. Spears also attended the National Student Research Conference in San Antonio July 19-21. He went in his capacity as BCD's SRG faculty adviser. Erik Kern (D3) also attended
the conference; he serves as secretary of the national group. Dental Hygiene The department welcomes JoAnn C. Scofield, who joined the faculty as assistant professor of dental hygiene July 8. Library Presentation: Cindy Scroggins conducted a seminar for science and health reporters at The Dallas Morning News headquarters. The seminar focused on tips for finding and
evaluating reliable online health information resources. Sponsored by the Medical Library Association during its annual meeting May 17-22 in Dallas, the seminar
is similar to those presented to the Boston Globe, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Washington Post.
Periodontics Presentations:
Dr. William Hallmon was an invited lecturer at Congreso Internacional de Odontologia de Maringa at the IV Forum Clinico in Maringa, Brazil, May 29-June 1. He lectured on periodontal systemic interactions, advances in contemporary periodontics, periodontics-restorative interactions, and non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Dr. Jackie Plemons was invited to present "Oral Manifestations of HIV Infection" during the HIV Mini-fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston, Texas, in June. She also made the presentation as co-speaker of a continuing education course sponsored by the Dental Oncology Education Program in San Antonio in June.Publication:

The department welcomes Dr. Miles Beach, assistant professor of periodontics, who will be teaching in the undergraduate periodontics clinic. He has 25 years of experience in periodontics, education, public speaking, management and team leadership.
Beach has a dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a master's degree in biomedical science from the University of Texas
Health Science Center in Houston, and an MBA in information systems and technology and marketing from the University of Cincinnati. His wife, Dorothy, is pursuing her interests in new product development. They have a
son, Brett, who is a firefighter and paramedic in Miamisburg, Ohio.Angela Lee-Noles served as assistant auxiliary supervisor for the Western Regional Examining Board June 19-22 in Seattle. |
