Leadership opportunities abound for Baylor College of Dentistry faculty and staff in professional, civic and community organizations.Leeanna Bartlett,
director of social services in public health sciences, was named to the advisory council of the Dallas County Medical Society and its Alliance Community Health Check project. She also was named to the community advisory board of the Teen Parent Program in the Garland, Texas, Independent School District.
Bartlett is serving on the Kaufman Countywide Community Partnership Board in Kaufman, Texas. This nonprofit, human services agency was established to promote the interests and welfare of Kaufman County citizens and
to improve access to care through the collaborative efforts of its members.
Dr. Byron W. Benson, professor of diagnostic sciences, recently accepted an appointment to the editorial board of the
Health Sciences Institute Journal, a publication of the University Paulista-UNIP in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Benson also was elected to a five-year term as a director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology. The term began in January.
Dr. Richard Ceen, professor of orthodontics, was appointed to the editorial advisory board of a new journal, Praxis, which premiered in June. The journal
covers orthodontic practice management issues.
Ceen also was appointed to the American Dental Association's Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. His one-year term as an alternate test constructor begins
in January.
Dr. Paul C. Dechow,
associate professor of biomedical sciences, is president of the International Association for Dental Research's Craniofacial Biology Group. He will hold the office through June 2003.
The group's mission, in addition
to advancing IADR's mission, is to provide a forum for the exchange of information in craniofacial biology and to provide recognition for research in this area. It also promotes cooperation in craniofacial biology
research among the dental profession, schools, industry and government agencies with the aim of maximizing effort to deliver care to the public.
Dr. David M. Grogan (BCD '81, '86),
assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, was reappointed to a second three-year term on the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' board of directors.
Dr. William W. Hallmon, professor and chair of periodontics, has been selected as a reviewer on focal anti-infective therapy for the American Academy of Periodontology's workshop "Emerging Science in Clinical
Periodontics: Tissue Engineering, Anti-infective agents, and Host Modulation Factors." The program is scheduled for July 2003.
Dr. D. William Harman,
associate dean for student and alumni services, was elected secretary of the American Dental Education Association's Section on Student Affairs during the ADEA annual meeting in March.
Ann McCann,
associate professor and director of planning and assessment in academic services, was appointed to the ADEA's Curriculum Analysis Tools Steering Committee.
Dr. Lynne Opperman,
assistant professor of biomedical sciences, was elected in April to the American Association of Anatomists' board of directors for a three-year term. In March, she also was elected to a three-year term on the IADR Craniofacial Biology Group's board.
Opperman served as a reviewer on the National Institutes of Health's Small Business Innovation Research Study Section March 27 in Bethesda, Md.
Dr. Jackie Plemons
(BCD '86, '88), clinical associate professor of periodontics and assistant director of BCD's Stomatology Clinic, was named dental director of the Texas/Oklahoma AIDS Education and Training centers in June.
Plemons
was appointed to the ADA's National Board Dental Hygiene Component B Test Construction Committee for 2002. The one-year appointment can be renewed annually. She also has been appointed a site visitor for the
association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.
