BCD program, people garner multiple honors.

Accolades keep rolling in for Baylor College of Dentistry faculty, staff, students and programs. It is evident that BCD's commitment to shaping the future of dentistry is secure.

Todd Baumann (D4), Dr. Stanton W. Cobb (BCD '83), assistant professor of restorative sciences, and Stephanie Cobb (BCD '81-DHyg), Cobb's wife, were guests at the president's table during the quarterly meeting of the national board of directors of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations in January. They were honored for their efforts on local, national and international levels.

Dr. Cobb also is the association's Dallas-area director. Baumann, a CMDA student leader, served as a delegate at the organization's national conference in June.

Dr. Patricia Garcia-Morales, graduate student in biomedical sciences, Dr. Carlos Morales-Ryan, clinical assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology, and Dr. Larry Wolford, clinical professor of OMS/P, were co-authors of an award-winning poster at the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' annual meeting last fall. "Efficacy of High Condylectomy for Management of Condylar Hyperplasia" received the award for best clinical presentation for a scientific poster.

BCD's International Oral Lichen Planus Support Group Web was recognized as the #1 site of the 10 most popular web sites for oral lichen planus on the MSN Web. Hosted by Dr. Nancy Burkhart, clinical assistant professor in periodontics, and Dr. Terry Rees (BCD '68-Perio), director of stomatology in periodontics, the site has been an integral part of the BCD Web since its formation in 1997.

Featuring guest experts and live discussions, the site is considered one of the leading resources in the world for online information and support concerning oral lichen planus. "Of thousands of sites both private and university-based, the BCD site continues to grow in popularity with both patients and practitioners," Rees said.

Dr. Pei Kang (BCD '02), a resident in BCD's graduate endodontics program, was first runner-up in the American Association of Anatomists' Langman Graduate Student Slide Presentation Award. The award was presented during the association's Experimental Biology meeting in April.

Kang was one of six finalists to compete for the award, which honors noted embryologist and educator Jan Langman. She also was a finalist for the award last year.

Dr. Raghunath Puttaiah, assistant professor of diagnostic sciences, received the International Association for Dental Research's Education Research Group Faculty Travel Award for 2001. Announced in December, the $250 award was given to the best presentation at the IADR conference in Chiba, Japan, in June 2001. According to the notification letter, Puttaiah's work on infection control in developing countries merited the award.

Ty Shafer (D4) received first place in the Hinman Student Research Symposium at the University of Tennessee-Memphis College of Dentistry in October. He received a plaque for outstanding student poster presentation in clinical sciences for his poster, "In Vitro Corrosion Resistance of Dental Cast Titanium and Titanium Alloys."

Sponsored by the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society and hosted by the Memphis dental school, the symposium attracts student researchers from dental schools across the nation. Each year, BCD sends a group of students to participate through funding by the college's Student Research Group and the IADR's Dallas section.

Shafer's coauthors included Dr. John Cai, assistant professor of biomaterials science and Shafer's faculty mentor, Dr. Toru Okabe, Regents professor and chair of biomaterials science, and Dr. Ikuya Watanabe, assistant professor of biomaterials science.
