Dr. Edward G. Miller Jr., professor of biomedical sciences, is one of three program directors for a new, four-year Initiative for Future Agricultural and Food Systems grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently. Titled "Exploring Biological Activities of Citrus Limonoids: A Multidisciplinary Approach," the grant is

funded at $1,075,165 to support several laboratories in Texas and Florida. BCD's portion of the funding is $120,325.

Research will concentrate on the relationship between molecular structure and biological activity (the anti-cancer activity linked to citrus limonoids). "In some ways, it is like a designer drug study," Miller said. "However, we are focusing on the prevention of cancer, not cancer treatment."

Miller also serves as a principal investigator at the BCD site. Co-investigator Dr. Samuel Taylor, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery/pharmacology and director of pharmacology, joins him. Other program directors include Dr. Bhimanagouda Patil at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Dr. Jennifer Brodbelt at the University of Texas in Austin.
