BCD in the News

On Air

Baylor College of Dentistry's nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV's 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.

"Dental Health Check" is available on BCD's Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report's recent topics include:

  • "Gentle Ortho" featuring Dr. Bob Borkowski. Some dentists are practicing kinder, gentler orthodontics. They are moving teeth at a slower rate and shortening treatment time.
  • "Power Brushes" featuring Dr. Dale Greer (BCD '77). A power toothbrush can cost more than $100; however, for some patients, the higher cost could save money spent on dental visits. For patients with periodontal or gum disease, orthodontic braces or lots of dental work – and for those who have difficulty using a manual toothbrush – a power toothbrush may be a good investment.
  • "Stop Snoring Implant" featuring Dr. Arlet Dunsworth (BCD '69, '73). A new procedure to stop snoring requires only one visit to the dentist. The procedure makes use of an innovative implant completely different from regular dental implants.
  • "Teen Teeth" featuring Dr. Francis Miranda (BCD '59, '76). According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, diet decisions and greater independence from parents are the reasons teenagers have a higher risk of tooth decay than younger children. Dental injuries, tobacco use and the emergence of wisdom teeth are other problems affecting teenagers.
