Clinical Services
Presentations: Dr. Thomas K. Hasegawa participated in three programs at the American Dental Education Association’s annual session in Seattle, Wash., March 6-7. He was the speaker for the Evaluating Ethics: Beyond Paper and Pencil program titled "Assessing Professionalism Across the Clinics."
Hasegawa led a faculty development workshop titled "Defining and Assessing Professionalism in the Clinic Setting." The workshop included Drs. Ron Botto and David Ozar. He also participated in another faculty development workshop titled "Clinical Faculty Credentialing: What, Where, When, Why and How," which was led by Dr. Robert Cederberg.
Other News: Hasegawa attended the 2004 Forum on Ethics, Values and Character Development at Southern Methodist University in Dallas March 2.
Communications & Development
Elizabeth J. Fulce presented "Caring for the Teeth God Gave Us" to two home-school classes of kindergarten, first-, second- and third-grade students at the Texoma Home Educators’ Enrichment Classes Co-op March 19. She used puppets, props and visual aids provided by BCD’s public health sciences department and distributed toothbrushes provided by her department.
Fulce and her husband, Glen, are actively involved in THE and have home-schooled their 14-year-old son, Garrett, for nine years.
Endodontics
The department welcomes Dr. Elizabeth M. Saunders, a visiting professor from Scotland. As a consultant and specialist in endodontics and clinical senior lecturer at the University of Dundee Dental School, she is responsible for the undergraduate endodontics program. Although she teaches restorative dentistry, her major clinical, research and teaching interest and involvement is in endodontics.
Saunders’ present investigation is to make a detailed comparison between undergraduate preclinical and clinical teaching of endodontics at Dundee Dental School and four U.S. dental schools. She arrived at Baylor College of Dentistry March 15 and will remain until April 16. She will spend two weeks each at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis, and the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio Dental School.
Saunders lectures widely in the United Kingdom and abroad. She also is involved with endodontics continuing education "hands-on" courses. She is past president of the British Endodontic Society.
Periodontics
Presentation: Dr. Miles Beach presented a lunch-and-learn seminar at the American Dental Education Association’s annual session in Seattle, Wash., March 7. The title was "Career Opportunities for Dentists."
Other News: Dr. David Kerns attended the ADEA meeting March 6-9. He worked as vice chair of the Section on Postgraduate Education for the past year and was nominated to be the 2005 chair of the section for the group’s meeting in Baltimore.
Angela Lee-Noles served as assistant auxiliary coordinator for the Western Regional Examining Board March 18-23 in Loma Linda, Calif.
The department welcomes Beth Crawford, patient appointment associate. She has worked in general dentistry for five years. Crawford recently moved from Plano, Texas, to Dallas with her husband, Charles, and two sons, Joseph and Adam. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, going to the movies and shopping.
BCD in the News
On Air
Baylor College of Dentistry’s nationally syndicated television oral health news report, "Dental Health Check," airs locally each Monday during WFAA-TV’s 6 a.m. and noon newscasts. In addition, "Dental Health Check" segments are now rebroadcast several times a day on the Texas Cable News Network.
- "Dental Health Check" is available on BCD’s Web site as well. Visit the site for scripts and information about the latest segments. Hosted by Dr. Linda Niessen (BCD), the report’s recent topics include:
- "Child Tooth Decay" featuring Dr. Linda Steele (BCD ’92). Dentists see a new trend among American children – a different pattern of tooth decay.
- "Chocolate and Health" featuring Lisa Harper. Is chocolate candy bad or good for your health? Researchers continue to study the cocoa bean and come up with some surprising information.
- "Crown in a Day" featuring Dr. Janet Gonzalez (BCD ’91). Dental decay can require more than a filling; some large cavities require a crown. New technology significantly shortens the time spent in a dental chair.
- "Laser Research" featuring Dr. Shannon Kramer (BCD). For years, lasers have been used in many medical procedures. Now they are being used in high-tech research labs to study oral diseases.
- "Orthodontic Implant" featuring Dr. Terry Adams (BCD ’78) and Dr. Tom Wilson. Orthodontists are using the newest dental implants to move teeth. The new procedure can replace the embarrassing headgear that many kids and teenagers must wear.
- "Smile Shapes" featuring Dr. David Hildebrand (BCD ’69). Most dental procedures improve your oral health. However, more patients choose cosmetic changes just to enhance their appearance.
- "Super Clean Mouth" featuring Hildebrand. According to Vogue magazine, Americans have a new health obsession – a super-clean mouth.
- "Thumb Sucking" featuring Steele. Pediatricians and pediatric dentists suggest children stop the habit of thumb sucking by at least age 5. How can parents help their child stop?

Baylor College of Dentistry is featured in each issue of Dateline, a bimonthly newsletter published by the Dallas County Dental Society. In addition to news and feature articles, college information and highlights are reported in the "BCD Byline" column.
- Dr. William Long (BCD ’45) was featured in "Baylor Honors Longs." The article appeared in the Feb. 8 edition of Temple Telegram in Temple, Texas.
- Dr. Ray Page (BCD ’86) was featured in "Healthcare Heroes." The article appeared in the Feb. 20 issue of the Business Press in Fort Worth, Texas.
Community Connection
BCD students make presentations
Third-year dental students made Tooth Talk presentations to students at 15 Texas elementary schools in Dallas, Forney, Irving and Rowlett. They also spoke to several groups of preschool children at The Science Place in Dallas Fair Park.
Fourth-year dental students provided dental exams, oral cancer screenings and dental health education at six community health fairs in Dallas and Lewisville, Texas. They provided dental screenings for students at an elementary school in each city as well. Several students also volunteered at Mission East Dallas.
Periodontic residents Dr. Fanasy Deming and Dr. Julie Horn represented the college at a wellness event in Mesquite, Texas, sponsored by the Mesquite Independent School District.
Supervising dentists for these events were Dr. T.C. Lyon, professor emeritus of public health sciences, and Dr. John Nelson, retired associate dean of clinical services and professor emeritus of diagnostic sciences.

BDR Online
BCD faculty, staff and students are encouraged to submit professional and personal news for publication in the Baylor Dental Record Online, BCD’s monthly online newsletter. Some submissions may be held for other publications such as the Baylor Dental Journal, the college’s annual magazine, or C-Scan, the quarterly newsletter of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center.
The deadline for submissions is generally the Friday following the first Monday of each month. However, a reminder will be sent via e-mail prior to each deadline. BCD Calendar
The Baylor College of Dentistry calendar of events and activities is available to faculty, staff and students on-campus via the college intranet. Just click on "College Calendar" to access it, and then click on a specific month for the current schedule.
The Dean’s Office maintains the calendar. To add an event, send a notice by campus mail or e-mail to Sara Wartes (swartes@tambcd.edu), administrative coordinator I in the office. Include the name of the event, the sponsoring organization (if any), date, time and place.

Destination 2004, the first CODA 2004 self-study newsletter, has been posted on the BCD intranet at http://exchange/intranet/Documents/CODA/newsletter1.pdf. It is written by Dr. Laurette Lipson (BCD ’93-Honor), professor in the Dean’s Office. Check the site for updates as the self-study progresses.
Fund-raisersBreakers: A Coffee House and More is now open in the B-level adjacent to the student lounge. The coffee cart offers a variety of drinks including coffee, tea, latte, espresso, frappuccino, smoothies and more. A percentage of the proceeds benefits BCD Student Council projects.Discount movie tickets are available for $6 each. Redeemable at any Loews or Magic Johnson theater in Texas, the tickets are good anytime including weekends and opening nights. Each ticket includes a coupon to get a small popcorn free. BCD’s Service and Outreach Society will vote on the group’s scholarship recipient during its next meeting on April 14 from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 604. Bring your lunch to the meeting. Formerly known as the BCD Women’s Club, the society will choose a dental or dental hygiene student to receive a $1,000 scholarship. New members are always welcome.
