Clinical Services

Presentations: Dr. Thomas Hasegawa and Dr. David Ozar of Loyola University in Chicago presented a faculty development workshop titled "Case-based Learning: Strategies for Constructing and Assessing the Written Dental Ethics Case" March 9 at the American Dental Education Association's annual session in San Antonio.

Hasegawa was a co-presenter of Dr. Robert Cederberg's faculty development workshop titled "Quality Assurance and Institutional Information Management." It was presented March 8 during the same meeting.

Other News: Hasegawa, who is immediate past president of Professional Ethics in Dentistry Networks, attended the organization's business meeting March 9. It was held in conjunction with the ADEA meeting.

On March 12, Hasegawa hosted Dr. Frank Panno and Jack Wiggins of the New York University School of Dentistry. The visit included a review of patient management, clinic operations, central sterilization, instrument management, infection control and data management.

Dental Hygiene

Presentations: Dr. Janice DeWald presented a poster at the Texas Dental Hygiene Educators meeting Feb. 21 in Austin, Texas, and at the American Dental Education Association's annual session March 10 in San Antonio. The title was "Effect of Grade Point Average and Enrollment in a Dental Hygiene National Board Review Course on Student Performance on the National Board Examination." Co-authors are Marylou E. Gutmann and Dr. Eric Solomon.

Lisa Harper presented a poster titled "Needs Assessment for Improving a Nutritional Curriculum in a Dental Hygiene Program" at the ADEA meeting March 10. DeWald is co-author.

Human Resources

Presentations: Pat Lopez was the keynote speaker at the Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School's Student Leadership Conference Jan. 3 in Dallas. Her presentation was titled "Importance of Education to Reach Your Potential." She made the same presentation at the Lyles Middle School's Career Day March 7 in Garland, Texas.

Periodontics

Presentations: Several faculty members and residents traveled to the International Periodontics Residency Visit: Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Programa de Posgrado de Periodoncia in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The following presentations were given on Feb. 19-20:

  • Drs. John Callia and Nathan Hodges – "Histochemical Analysis of Distraction Osteogenesis and Autogenous Onlay Graft for Implant Placement in the Canine Model"
  • Dr. Julie Horn – "Absolute Orthodontic Anchorage"
  • Dr. David Kerns – "Palatal Swellings"
  • Dr. Ari Pontikas – "Restoration of Congenitally Missing Dentition Utilizing Implants and Periodontal Plastic Surgery"
  • Dr. Michael Sparks – "Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia"

Publication: Dr. Terry Rees is the co-author of three chapters in the newly published text, Fundamentals of Periodontics ( 2nd edition, 2003, TG Wilson and KS Kornman, Editors. Quintessence Publishing Company Inc.). The chapters are titled "Endocrine Disorders" (Chapter 13), "Other Systemic Modifiers" (Chapter 14) and "Lesions in the Oral Mucous Membranes and Periodontium" (Chapter 29).

Other News: The department extends congratulations to Horn, who was awarded a finalist position for her creative quilt work titled "Sweet Child of Mine." She entered the project in the International Quilt Festival in Houston last November.

Student and Alumni Services

Presentation: Moira Allen, Dr. Bill Harman, Dr. Marvin Hirsh, Dr. Dan Jones and Dr. Claude Williams presented "Update on Cultural Competency Initiatives at Baylor College of Dentistry" for the Section on Student Affairs at the American Dental Education Association's annual meeting in San Antonio March 11.
