BCD students compete in On the Cusp
The Dallas County Dental Society's Southwest Dental Conference is known for its excellent professional programs, but it has its fun side as well – and three teams of Baylor College of Dentistry students got a look at
that side firsthand.
For the third year in a row, the society sponsored "On the Cusp," a dental knowledge question-and-answer game (similar to "Jeopardy") for students. Three three-member teams advanced from a seven-team BCD elimination
contest to compete at the conference for cash prizes. The first-place team received $500, and the second- and third-place teams each received $300.
Jed Hildebrand (D4), Zane Kemp (D4) and Sandeep Patel (D4) took first place. Jesse Arbaugh (D4), Jeff Melton (D4) and Pam Nicoara (D4) placed second. Bobby Jivnani
(D4), Warren Johnson (D4) and Samer Qadri (D4) received third place.
"It's a fun way to get students involved in organized dentistry," said Dr. Wayne Woods (BCD '88), associate professor of restorative sciences at BCD and DCDS liaison to BCD students. "They're attracted to DCDS
and the conference because they come out for 'On the Cusp.' Once they're there, however, they see the fun and professional benefits of organized dentistry."
Woods and Moira Allen, director of student affairs in student and alumni services, coordinated the effort at BCD. Dr. Tom McKinney
(BCD '68), associate professor of restorative sciences, provided computer support during the DCDS competition. Dr. Mike Stuart (BCD '86) of Mesquite, Texas, served as emcee. Judges were Dr. Justin Aurbach
(BCD '69), Dr. Arlet Dunsworth (BCD '69, '73) and Dr. Frank Higginbottom (BCD '71), all of Dallas.
