BCD faculty, students receive kudos
The Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association announced the Teacher-of-the-Year award winners in March. Dr. Stan Ashworth (BCD '71), assistant professor of general dentistry, is the dental honoree;
Marylou Gutmann, professor in BCD's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, is the dental hygiene honoree.
Ashworth and Gutmann were selected by students to receive the awards. The Alumni Association will recognize them during a pre-commencement dinner and dance for senior students May 21. They also will carry the BCD
ceremonial mace during the commencement's processional and recessional May 22.
Andi McPhillips (D2) and James VandeBerg (D2) were award winners in the American Association for Dental Research's Caulk/Dentsply Student Research Competition, which took place during the AADR's annual
session in San Antonio in March. McPhillips took second place in the basic sciences division; her mentor is Dr. Robert Spears (BCD '02), assistant professor of biomedical sciences. VandeBerg was a
finalist in the clinical sciences division; his mentor is Dr. Bob Hinton, associate professor of biomedical sciences.
Sarah Pollan (D1) was named a winner of the 2003 Summer Dental Student Award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in March. She will spend eight weeks at NIDCR in Bethesda, Md., this
summer, conducting research under the guidance of an institute mentor.
Joe Rawlins (D2) received one of the prestigious 2003 AADR Student Research Fellowship awards during the association's annual session. Dr. Lynne Opperman,
assistant professor of biomedical sciences, is his mentor.
Dr. Claude Williams,
director of community outreach in communications and development, received an award from the Minority Affairs Section of the American Dental Education Association in March. Given in recognition of Williams' "valuable contribution in support of diversity in the dental profession," the award was presented at the association's annual session in San Antonio.
Dr. Rosemarie Zartman (BCD '91), assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, was lauded for the "Outstanding Manuscript for 2002 in the Category of Educational Methodologies." Presented by the Journal of Dental Education during the ADEA annual session in March, the award was presented for "Using OSCE-based Evaluation: Curricular Impact Over Time." Published in the journal's December 2002 issue, the manuscript's co-authors are: Dr. William Boone;
Dr. Alton McWhorter, associate professor and director of the predoctoral program in pediatric dentistry; and Dr. N. Sue Seale (BCD '70, '72, '79), Regents professor and chair of pediatric dentistry.
