Academic Services

Presentation: Ann McCann served as a facilitator for "Leadership Strategies for Department Chairs and Program Directors: An ADEA Leadership Institute Program" during the American Dental Education Association's meeting in March. It was inadvertently omitted from the "ADEA, IADR Presenters" article that appeared in the March BDR Online.

Biomaterials Science

Presentation: Dr. Toru Okabe was invited to the Department of Materials Science Colloquium at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, Feb. 27. He spoke on aspects of titanium casting.

Other News: Dr. Naoki Baba joined the department as a visiting scientist on Jan. 15. Previously, he served as an instructor in the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics at Nagasaki University School of Dentistry in Nagasaki, Japan.

Biomedical Sciences

Presentation: Dr. Mahyar Nouri-Shirazi presented an abstract, "Nicotine Hampers Type-1 Cell-mediated Immunity Through Down-regulation of IL-12 Production by Dendritic Cells," during the International Association for Dental Research's meeting in March. It was inadvertently omitted from the "ADEA, IADR Presenters" article that appeared in the March BDR Online.

Other News: Dr. Edward G. Miller attended the 2002 Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center's annual meeting in College Station, Texas, Feb. 20-22. He also attended the Cancer Nutrition Network for Texans' Science Council meeting in Houston March 1.

Communications and Development

Susan Mitchell Jackson attended the first meeting of the 2002 class of Leadership Texas Feb. 18-20 in Austin, Texas. She is one of only 100 women who were selected to participate in the yearlong, statewide educational program for women in prominent leadership positions. A full article will appear in the Summer 2002 issue of the Baylor Dental Record.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology

Presentations: Dr. Roger Alexander paid a consultant visit to the advanced education in general dentistry residency program at the U.S. Army Dental Activity in Fort Campbell, Ky., Feb. 21-22. He presented "Complications of Dentoalveolar Surgery," "Use of the Fingerstick Glucometer in Diagnosis and in Management of Medical Emergencies," and "The Use and Abuse of Prophylactic Antibiotics in Dentistry."

Alexander also presented "Generationally Perpetuated Myths of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery" to the Dental Activity's dental staff. In addition, he presented an evening continuing education program to the 8th District Dental Society of the Tennessee Dental Association in Clarksville, Tenn. The program was titled "Dentists and Suicide: Fact or Fiction?"

Other News: Alexander attended the American Dental Education Association's annual meeting in March. During that meeting, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' national task force presented its competency document to the Section on Oral Surgery, Anesthesia and Hospital Dentistry, which formally accepted the document by unanimous vote. Alexander served on the AAOMS task force.

The document recommends competencies for graduating dentists in oral and maxillofacial surgery, local anesthesia, pain and anxiety control, and office medical emergencies. The recommended and accepted competencies will be published in an upcoming Journal of Dental Education.

Other News: Dr. Brad Chvatal placed 20th in the Motorola Austin Marathon Open on Feb. 17.  Although his rank qualified him for the Boston Marathon, Chvatal will not compete this year. He has run the Boston Marathon previously.

Periodontics

Drs. Nancy Burkhart and Terry Rees hosted a live discussion session via the Web for the International Oral Lichen Planus Support Group Feb. 28. The special guest was Dr. Martin Thornhill, chair of clinical oral sciences at Bart's & the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
