BCD takes dental health education to Texas schools

Baylor College of Dentistry's Office of Social Services and Delta Dental joined forces to implement a preventive dental program for students at a Mesquite, Texas, elementary school in February. About 400 children were given dental exams, dental education and free toothbrushes. Dental sealants were placed on more than 100 teeth under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Crane, clinical assistant professor of public health sciences.

D3 students made Tooth Talk presentations to students at 14 schools in Dallas, Mesquite and Garland, Texas. These included one preschool, 11 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. They also participated in two Project Dental Awareness programs. By the Roots was presented to children at seven elementary schools in seven Texas school districts including Dallas, Georgetown, Lone Oak, Mesquite, Mineola, North Hopkins and San Antonio.

Dental and dental hygiene students provided dental exams, oral cancer screenings and dental health education at nine health fairs in Dallas, Mesquite and Grand Prairie, Texas. Dr. John Nelson, retired professor and associate dean for clinical services, was the supervising dentist at these events.
