SECC campaign

SECC LogoWith high gas prices and tough economic times, fellow Texans need our help. From now until Oct. 31, HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry is participating in the State Employee Charitable Campaign to do just that.

The SECC is an annual giving campaign for Texas state employees that provides a streamlined way for employees to donate to charities of their choosing. Last year, the statewide campaign raised $9.7 million for charitable organizations.

Our college’s goal is to donate $30,000 this year to those charities. The fundraising will not only include personal giving; special events also are planned at HSC-BCD to help raise money.

Each staff and faculty member should receive a flier explaining the SECC and a pledge form. Staff employees already heard about SECC at a Staff Forum meeting on Sept. 4, when two speakers shared their personal stories with the group. Another charity representative will visit with faculty on Sept. 18, and additional events are planned for October.

The college’s main SECC event will be its kickoff Sept. 15. A vendor fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will showcase charities that benefit from the SECC. Many will have booths displayed on the college’s sixth floor and will provide free giveaway items and information. The fair provides employees a way to get a firsthand sense of charities’ needs, administration and goals.

Now in its 14th year, the SECC supports 500 Texas, national and international charities that provide health care, social services and other help to those in need. For a charity to receive SECC funding, it must meet stringent guidelines including low operating costs and legal requirements. A list of SECC charities can be viewed online at www.secctexas.org/public/files/File/pdfs/PRESS_Dallas_SECC08.pdf.

Employees can give to the SECC by submitting pledge forms to the human resources office in room 524 or by logging into HRConnect and clicking on SECC Enrollment. If employees make a one-time donation with HRConnect, they will need to print out their pledge form, write a check and bring both to the human resources office.

The deadline for SECC donations is Oct. 31. All employees are eligible to give; there is a $2 minimum donation per charity. Employees can learn more about SECC by e-mailing the college’s SECC co-chairs: Dale Lewis at dlewis@bcd.tamhsc.edu or Angela Hickman at ahickman@bcd.tamhsc.edu.
