OMS BarbequeThe oral and maxillofacial surgery faculty held its 9th annual Student Volunteers Appreciation Cookout Aug. 9 at the home of Dr. Gil Triplett, Regents professor.

The event was created as a way to thank third- and fourth-year dental students who volunteer two to four weeks of their summer break in July and August to staff the Emergency Surgery Clinic.

“This department tradition was started by Dr. Roger Alexander almost a decade ago and, as usual, it was a wonderful evening,” says Dr. David Grogan, associate professor and chair of the department. “It is just a small token of our appreciation to the students for volunteering their discretionary time during the summer break to care for patients with acute needs.”

More than 30 students volunteered their time allowing patients with severe pain or acute infections to receive care before the school reopened for the fall semester.

The student-volunteers and their guests enjoyed steaks, potatoes and corn on the cob, prepared by the oral surgery  faculty, while chatting and watching preseason football.
