Community Connection -November 2008

Smilewalk-2Two teams represented HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry and collectively raised nearly $1,600 for the Children’s Oral Health Center at SMILEWalk Sept. 27 at White Rock Lake.

The HSC-BCD student team, named The Fighting Fluorides, won second place for its T-shirt design. The team included 20 students and was led by second-year dental hygiene student Faye Haggard.

“SMILEWalk is a great cause,” Haggard says. “It gets the Dallas community involved in helping and providing for children who cannot necessarily afford the dental care they need.”

Teammate and first-year dental hygiene student Brian Schweers agrees.

“It was a great experience and cause, and I look forward to being involved in this event next year and many years to come,” he says.

The team also included Dr. Janice DeWald, professor and chair of dental hygiene, and Dr. Lynne Opperman, professor in biomedical sciences and director of technology development. Several other faculty and staff members donated money to the team.

“The event was the most well-attended in the three years it has been up and running,” Bolin says. “Lisa and I would like to thank all the walkers and the donors for their generosity and goodwill gestures in helping kids who otherwise would receive no care in the Dallas and Richardson school districts. We hope to continue to participate in SMILEWalk as it is taken over by Community Dental Care, one of our collaborating agencies that provides community-based rotation locations for dental hygiene students and D4 dental students.”

Overall, this year’s SMILEWalk raised more than $50,000 for Dallas children’s dental care. More than 350 walkers and volunteers helped at the event.
