Faculty members and students from HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry took the Seal Mobile on a road trip May 2 to Leonard, Texas, to provide free dental care to the town’s elementary students.
Leonard is 60 miles northeast of Dallas and home to 1,800 residents. Of that small population, the HSC-BCD volunteers cared for more than 30 children in one day. They provided free dental exams, sealants and fluoride varnish applications.
The visit was in response to a request from the school’s principal, who knew his students could benefit from the Seal Mobile’s services.
Third-year dental students Purvi Patel, Sohail Dar and David Vo volunteered for the event. Dr. Stephen Crane and Leeanna Bartlett, assistant professors in public health sciences, led the team. HSC-BCD 1990 alumnus Dr. Scott Ervin also volunteered for the day.
In addition to preventive dental care, the children received toothpaste, toothbrushes and stickers.
