Student Scene - March 2009
Many of the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene students who attended are officers of the Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association at HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry.
Shannon Nino, SADHA vice president and dental hygiene junior, says this year’s session had the highest statewide attendance ever, with 440 students from across Texas.
Kelly Muhney, assistant professor in dental hygiene and SADHA faculty adviser, says the annual session is very valuable to the students.
“The event is a wonderful opportunity for all dental hygiene students in Texas to unite, network and become informed about the future of their profession,” she says.
The HSC-BCD attendees took full advantage of the session’s events. Junior dental hygiene student and DH1 class president Shahriela Ganjoor was elected alternate student delegate to the TDHA during 2009 (see story in leadership section). Dental hygiene faculty attended the Texas Dental Hygiene Educators’ Conference in conjunction with the meeting.
The session wasn’t all strictly business – it also offered time for fun and fellowship. A highlight was a fashion show in which contestants created outfits from dental materials.
“I really enjoyed meeting with the other dental hygiene students around the state of Texas from other schools,” Nino says. “I look forward to attending next year.”
Student membership to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association is granted to all dental hygiene students in the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene. Student membership entitles students to receive the association’s journal, the opportunity to apply for grants and loans to assist in education financing, and the chance to participate in the association’s activities at the local, state and national levels.
