Dr. Mari Koike presented a paper titled “Cast titanium alloys for dental applications” at the 24th annual conference & exhibition of the International Titanium Association in Las Vegas Sept. 21-24. Dr. Toru Okabe was a co-author of the paper.
Koike was a guest speaker for the biomedical sciences department’s “bring your own lunch” seminar series Nov. 5. Her presentation was “The use of ICP-MS for elemental analysis in aqueous solutions.”

Koike was a U.S. delegate to the International Standard Organization technical committee meeting for dentistry in Götenberg, Sweden, Sept. 29 to Oct. 4.
Dr. Avadhesh C. Sharma and Mani Chopra attended the annual meeting of the Association of Scientists of Indian Origin in America Jan. 17-19 in Denton, Texas. During the meeting, Sharma was elected president of the ASIOA (see story in leadership section) and chaired the breakout session about sepsis. Chopra received second place in the Junior Scientist Award (see story in awards section). They also gave two oral and three poster presentations:

Dr. Rena D'Souza has been appointed to serve as a member on the International Association for Dental Research regional development committee. In addition, she has been selected by the board of directors of the American Association for Dental Research as a candidate for the board’s vice president. The election will be this fall.
