Black History Month speaker
The keynote speaker for the 18th annual event was Dr. Clifford W. Houston, associate vice president for educational outreach at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Houston presented “The Journey of One Microbiologist…Still in Progress.” He shared how his life experiences have driven him to improve science education for future generations.
Houston holds the Herman Barnett Distinguished Endowed Professorship in microbiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. While maintaining his positions at UTMB, he served a two-year appointment as deputy associate administrator for education for NASA, where he guided space science outreach programs and research opportunities for students and faculty. He currently serves on the National Institute of General Medical Sciences Advisory Council and as steering committee chair for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students.
