Jo Spears, a departmental secretary for research and graduate studies, has served at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry for 20 years.
Her favorite memories at the college are from what Spears calls “the early days” when she worked in the basement as a departmental secretary for anatomy.
“I had a lot of interaction with the first-year students when they took gross anatomy, and I really enjoyed getting to know them so well,” she says.
Today, Spears works on the college’s fourth floor, where she oversees the research department’s budget and ensures the faculty and research graduate programs are in compliance. “That means knowing all rules, regulations and policies,” she says.
Spears says she enjoys the challenging and ever-changing elements of her job.
“It requires independent thought and responsibility,” she says. “It keeps me on my toes.”
Spears and her husband, Robert, have three children, the youngest a high school senior.
