Dr. Marvin Hirsh
Dr. Marvin Hirsh is an associate professor in restorative sciences at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry and a poet in his free time.
Hirsh says working with “young people” – and he jokes everybody is a “young person” to him – makes him feel like he’s contributing something useful.
“Part of me leaves with each student as they go forth after graduation, and that is very gratifying,” he says.
Since he was 14 years old, Hirsh has been working because he enjoys being active and “seeing things come to fruition.”
One such project that came to fruition was a series of teaching videos he helped make when he first came to the college. Hirsh helped write the videos’ scripts and supervise their filming and editing. That experience is one of his favorite memories.
Outside work, Hirsh enjoys expressing himself by writing and performing poetry. He’s written several forms of poetry, but his favorite is haiku.
“It is a short form, basically 17 syllables, that has the capability of unlimited expression,” Hirsh says.
