Dr. Bruno Ruest, assistant professor in biomedical sciences, is “Forney’s Fastest Pie Eater.”

A resident of Forney, Texas, Ruest entered the pie-eating contest at the community’s Christmas celebration Dec. 1 in downtown Forney. Ruest out-ate 14 other contestants to win a 50-inch flat screen plasma TV.

“From the moment I registered for the contest, I kept telling myself that I was going to win,” says Ruest.

Contestants were not allowed to use their hands and had to eat the entire pie including the crust, which Ruest says was the most difficult part.

“I had to bite the crust and pan sides to get it, and then I had to scrape the moist bottom crust with my teeth,” he says. “The moist crust was sticking to the plate.”

In preparation for the contest, Ruest spent the previous week dieting and ate only an apple the morning of the competition to stimulate his appetite. As the 11:30 a.m. start time neared and Ruest’s nerves set in, he lost his appetite but not his hunger to win.

“I stayed focused on the job and the prize, not thinking about the pie itself,” says Ruest. “Luckily, it was a tart cherry pie, not a sweet one. That would have been awful!”
