Community Connection

Third- and fourth-year dental students have participated in numerous community service activities since classes resumed in August.

Students provided services at 22 health fairs in Arlington, Carrollton, Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth and Richardson. Supervising dentists were: Drs. Anneta Bitouni and Stephen Crane, assistant professors in public health sciences; Dr. Michael Larsen, HSC-BCD endodontic resident; Dr. T.C. Lyon, professor emeritus in public health sciences (retired); Dr. Dannette McNew, assistant clinical professor in general dentistry; Dr. John Nelson, professor emeritus and former associate dean for clinical affairs (retired); and Dr. Reginald Taylor, associate professor and director of predoctoral orthodontics. Additionally, students served time at two public health clinics – Dental Health Arlington and Mission East Dallas.

Students also organized 11 Tooth Talks in Dallas and four Career-Tooth Talks at the dental school and at several Dallas schools. Dental screenings were conducted at Mark Twain Elementary School in Richardson, and dental students participated in a Garland Independent School District health professions project and another with Sulphur Springs ISD’s Head Start sealant project.
