Honors
Dr. Darren Roesch was elected secretary of the American Dental Education Association Section on Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The section’s primary focus is the exchange of ideas regarding human physiology and research in dental education.
Ph.D. student Dr. Maria Serrano was awarded the Texas A&M Health Science Center Presidential Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. The scholarship was created for students who exemplify leadership, professionalism, academic performance and a commitment to community service.
Meetings
Dr. Jay Groppe attended the biennial conference of the Association of Biochemistry Course Directors, which was May 5-9 in Santa Fe, N.M. The group is trying to increase representation from dental schools, which currently number only about a half dozen in the association. The meeting provided an opportunity to learn about other curricula, teaching modalities, means to increase relevance and strategies for assisting students who struggle with the topic.
Appointments
Dr. Jay Groppe is now a representative on the Texas A&M University Council of Principal Investigators, which comprises individuals from the entire Texas A&M research community and is dedicated to increasing the system’s presence as a nationally recognized research institution. Dr. Lynne Opperman previously served as representative.

Lisa Mallonee was chosen as the recipient of the 2013 Dallas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Media Award. Part of the selection criteria includes the individual’s contribution to the advancement of nutrition and dietetics in the Dallas area through use of media.
