Biggest Loser competition

Biggest loserMore than 30 staff members at HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry are developing healthy habits as they compete to determine who is the college’s “Biggest Loser.”

Since the first week of March, 38 staff members have been losing weight in a friendly competition inspired by the popular TV program and sponsored by Staff Forum.

In September, the participant who has lost the most weight will take home $285, and the second place winner will get $95. The prizes are 75 percent and 25 percent, respectively, of the $10 entry fees paid by each participant.

The idea grew from a similar competition held by staff at the Health Science Center in College Station. Liz Lester, Staff Forum vice president, got tips from the HSC contest leaders and modified the competition for HSC-BCD.

“The most important point we want to make is that we want to lose weight in a healthy way,” Lester says. “Also, we hope to get to know each other on a level other than just a co-worker.”

Participants have formed a walking group that meets daily at noon and a stair-climbing group that meets at 2:30 p.m. On April 6, they held their first monthly healthy potluck lunch, where the group shared healthy dishes and voted for the best recipe.

Meanwhile, Sharon Limes, college nurse in the student health clinic, is confidentially maintaining the participants’ weights and e-mailing them tips for healthy living.

After participants follow any weight loss program of their choice for six months, they’ll weigh again officially in the first week of September, when the “Biggest Loser” will be crowned.
