Same race, new location

A change in location energizes 2012 Smile Walk & Run, which pulled in more than $15,000
In its seventh year, the Oct. 6 Smile Walk & Run featured some of the old mixed with a little new. The most noticeable change this year: The race location moved several miles up the road from Bachman Lake in Dallas to McInnish Park in Carrolton, Texas. Some new prize incentives for the smile walk and 5K — think autographed Dirk Nowitzki Mavericks memorabilia — as well as an inflatable slide and new prize wheel, added to the fun.
The final result was a cool $15,401, and that was just in registration fees and donations collected before the race — of which Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry and Baylor Oral Health Foundation are among the sponsors. In comparison, funds raised at the 2011 run topped out at $11,638.
The funds will be distributed among all 12 clinics within Community Dental Care, the state’s largest nonprofit provider of routine and preventive oral health care. The organization works to provide dental treatment to children, seniors and patients in need, including Dallas’ homeless population and domestic abuse victims. TAMHSC-BCD students even perform clinical rotations through CDC centers.
In the works is a dental center for Grand Prairie, Texas, with anticipated opening in 2013. Fundraising initiatives for that project are currently geared toward dental equipment needs.
