Does your fastest running pace more closely resemble a stroll than a sprint? Fear not, you can still support TAWD in its cause.

Even if you couldn’t make it to NorthPark Center for the 2012 Dallas Race for the Cure, there’s still time to donate to the efforts of the college’s Texas Association of Women Dentists chapter. Donations for the Susan G. Komen initiative on the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry team page may still be submitted for up to one week after the 1K walk and 5K race events, which took place Oct. 20.

TAWD community service representative Lesley Latham, D3, said about half of the TAMHSC-BCD team — typically made up of as many as 25 dental students, faculty, staff and spouses — opts to run while the other half uses the time to walk and socialize.

“Training is an individual effort,” Latham says. “The teams in the past have been accustomed to jogging that distance from weekly workouts, however, a great number will walk for those of us who are not ready for three miles of sweat.”

In either case, Latham says the most rewarding part of the experience is talking with the other participants and hearing their stories.

“Breast cancer has affected the lives of those close to us,” Latham says. “It's a great time to see our classmates pay homage to the men and women who've struggle against this disease.”
