Aug. 2 was an early morning for volunteers at the Mayor’s Back to School Fair. And with a total of six back-to-school initiatives this month, that’s just the beginning.

It was before dawn Aug. 2, but for public health sciences staff, faculty and volunteers, the day had begun hours earlier. They didn’t mind.

As volunteers arrived at 6 a.m. to set up finishing touches on the college’s 25 dental screening stations at the 2012 Mayor’s Back to School Fair, a line of thousands of parents and children had already snaked its way around the Centennial Building at Fair Park.

The public health sciences department participated in the community effort, a free event offered to provide school supplies, immunizations, dental and vision screenings, and haircuts to approximately 15,000 qualifying Dallas schoolchildren.

This year, more than 1,000 of them received dental screenings and fluoride varnish at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry’s station. The effort was made possible because of volunteers from across the college and beyond. More than 100 D2s, D3s, DH2s, pediatric dentistry residents, faculty and staff donated their time to the initiative, which lasts from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Predental students from the Future Dentist Club and University of Texas at Dallas were also on hand to help, as were dental assistants from Community Dental Care.

As school-age kids were sent on their way, they didn’t leave empty handed: Each child received a goody bag complete with a toothbrush and toothpaste, courtesy of Colgate.

The early morning effort jump-starts several weeks of community-based work as the dental school continues to expand its reach across the metroplex.

The Department of Public Health Sciences is also coordinating screenings and fluoride varnish at the following back-to-school initiatives:

  • Sat., Aug. 4: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Rockwall Back to School Fair at Lake Pointe Church
  • Wed., Aug. 8: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Tarrant County Back to School Roundup at Will Rogers Memorial Center, Fort Worth, Texas
