“How many people get to say they love their job? I am uncertain how many feel this way, but if someone were to create a list, I would be at the top.”

If you ask Dr. Mohsen Taleghani to recount some favorite moments from his 25 years at the dental school, he’ll be happy to share a few highlights. Like the time the D4s achieved a 99 percent passing rate on their board exams, or when Dolores Peeler, Taleghani’s former assistant, won the Staff of the Quarter Award.

“She deservedly received the award. She was so excited and flattered,” says Taleghani, who nominated her for the honor.

Listen closely and you’ll notice Taleghani’s answers have nothing to do with himself but instead focus on his students and colleagues, one of his reasons for staying at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry.

“I enjoy coming to work every day,” says Taleghani. “There are always new challenges and rewards; nothing at TAMHSC-BCD ever becomes routine,” he adds. There is not anything else I would rather be doing at this time.”

As professor and chair of general dentistry, Taleghani oversees the Comprehensive Care program for the D4s, a responsibility with benefits that are twofold: He gets to watch the students develop in their professionalism, clinical skills and approaches to patient care, and at the same time, he continues to learn from others at the dental school.

“Because of the assistance of all of the talented people at TAMHSC-BCD, the students are able to attain their goal of graduating from the best institution in the nation,” he says. “We are very fortunate to have such a wealth of knowledge within our institution and so many people willing to share their expertise with others.”

In the days leading up to the Jan. 24 Service Awards Ceremony, Taleghani shares a remark about his career at the dental school, one that dates back to June 1986 when he joined the faculty as an associate professor.

“How many people get to say they love their job?” he asks. “I am uncertain how many feel this way, but if someone were to create a list, I would be at the top.”

How Taleghani passes the time when he’s away from TAMHSC-BCD:

“I enjoy playing racquetball, hiking, spending time with my family, gardening, and watching the ‘The Simpsons’ and the Mavericks.”

Family stats:

“I am very blessed to have a wonderful family. I have been married for almost 37 years to Akram, a pharmacist at Baylor University Medical Center. Both of my children, Sina and Anita, are adults who are happy, well adjusted and love their careers. What more could a parent ask for? Except maybe some grandkids. Additionally, about eight years ago we adopted a miniature schnauzer, whom we named Oscar. I was hesitant to bring him into the family, as this was the first dog we have ever had, however, this was one of my best decisions. He has brought so much joy and entertainment that I cannot imagine not having him as a part of our family.”
