Each January, the Southwest Dental Conference offers a wonderful opportunity for our alumni to reconnect, gain continuing education and recognize individuals who have significantly impacted the Dallas dental community and beyond. It’s an opportunity to start the new year off on a positive note.
During the Jan. 13 Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association 2012 Homecoming Reception, alumni convened at The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas for refreshments, conversation and an award presentation honoring a distinguished alumnus and — thanks to the recently endowed Betty J. Scott Scholarship — a standout dental student.
I enjoyed the opportunity to meet many alumni at this event, and I continue to be impressed by the level of involvement at this school.
Whether alumni support is through professional activities, community service, monetary donations for facilities or programs, or time spent with students or colleagues, it makes an incredible difference in the strength of our programs. Many of our alumni even walk these halls as faculty members, making strides in patient care and research every workday.
We have an exciting initiative effective now, at the start of 2012. The Office of Alumni Services is now integrated with the Office of Communications & Institutional Advancement. This change is meant to streamline communications with alumni and enhance the services we provide. It also allows Dr. Charles Arcoria, course director and associate professor in restorative sciences, to fulfill his longtime desire to return to teaching full time. I am grateful that, despite his increasing academic duties, Dr. Arcoria and his team have agreed to assist with the transition through May 2012. I must commend him on the amazing job he has done of successfully wearing so many hats at the college for so long.
Please know that my door is always open to the entire TAMHSC-BCD community. I value the unique perspective of alumni on the direction of our dental school programs, and would be happy to sit down with any of you to discuss how we can continue our tradition of excellence in 2012 and beyond.
You can learn more about the dean’s background and vision for the dental school in the About the Dean page of the TAMHSC-BCD website.
