For months, I looked forward to assuming the position of dean at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry. Shortly after starting my tenure at the college, I can say I am truly honored to be a part of this special community of faculty, students, staff, alumni, donors, parents and friends. Your hard work and commitment to excellence have defined TAMHSC-BCD as a premier institution of dental education.
As I walked into the dental school the morning of Sept. 1, I thought about the 15 deans who came before me and the extraordinary legacy they have left for all of us to steward. It was at once humbling and energizing.
I believe our college is singularly equipped to find creative and thoughtful ways of addressing the challenges facing dental education and the country’s changing health care system. I welcome the opportunity to work with you as we take on those challenges.
So where do we begin? Let’s look at these challenges as opportunities for positive growth and change. I believe that thoughtful listening followed by strategic planning and assessment is the indispensable foundation of good leadership, and that is where I will put my focus in the coming months.
I do want to hear from as many of you as possible — your ideas, concerns and dreams for TAMHSC-BCD. For those alumni, parents and friends I have not met, I look forward to the opportunity to get to know each of you as the 2011-2012 academic year progresses.
On that note, the start of each academic year is a time of high energy and high expectation. Never have I looked forward to a new year more than this one that we’ve begun together.
