Promotions bring new titles, recognition to several faculty members

While it’s been several months since faculty promotions were announced, these Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry faculty members’ titles officially change on Sept. 1. As these individuals prepare for the 2011-2012 academic year, each of them took a few moments to share what the promotions mean to them. Some also offer glimpses into their plans at TAMHSC-BCD for the coming months.

Dr. Hoda Abdellatif, associate professor, Department of Public Health Sciences

On her reaction to the promotion:

“I am obviously pleased with my promotion and believe that it is not so much recognition for past achievements, but a ‘vote of confidence’ for what I can bring to BCD in the area of dental public health sciences and especially in my most recent area of focus — evidence-based dentistry.”

Dr. Celeste Abraham, associate professor, Department of Periodontics

On her reaction to the promotion:

“Personally and professionally, I would not be where I am today had it not been for the unique people, singular events, hard choices and lesson-filled consequences that have made my life meaningful. Among those singular events, this promotion stands out as a distinct academic milestone that evokes gratitude to my Lord Jesus Christ, gives me joy in accomplishment, satisfaction in peer-recognition and affirms my passion for teaching and learning. Among those unique people are the faculty members and my colleagues in the Department of Periodontics and those outside BCD who mentored and encouraged me and to whom I am deeply grateful.”

How the promotion factors into her plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“As recognition of my experience, skills and knowledge gained over 18 years at BCD, this promotion will serve me as I pursue excellence in teaching at BCD and Collin College, in the undergraduate periodontics clinic, at the Stomatology Center, in clinical research, in academic publications, and in institution-wide and international projects. …"

Dr. Frank Higginbottom, clinical professor, Department of Restorative Sciences

On his reaction to the promotion:

“I have always enjoyed my association with the college of dentistry since my graduation in 1971. … My primary focus has been in the Department of Restorative Sciences and in graduate prosthodontics. I was very flattered and honored to be nominated for the position of clinical professor.”

How the promotion factors into his plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“My focus for the upcoming year is to continue to offer the private practice perspective to our students and residents. Increasingly important is the exponential progress and change through digital technologies, which I am excited to share with our students.”

Dr. Bob Hutchins, professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences

On his reaction to the promotion:

“My promotion to full professor has been very gratifying. The promotion signifies a benchmark in one’s career and reflects recognition by your peers that you have reached a significant level of teaching and productivity within your primary area of concentration, which for me was the area of teaching with tenure. I am very thankful that I have a network of great colleagues and friends who have been unselfish and gone out of their way to assist me in my career.”

How the promotion factors into his plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“Generally speaking, I can't say that this promotion will change anything I have planned for the upcoming academic year. However, this should give me a better perspective on what I've done to get to this point and consider ways to better assist others as they move forward with their careers.”

Dr. Ann McCann, professor, Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, and director of planning and assessment, Office of Academic Affairs

On her reaction to the promotion:

“It is very satisfying to know that all my efforts have been recognized by faculty, colleagues and the TAMHSC-BCD. On a day-to-day basis, it is sometimes hard to determine if your work is valued.”

How the promotion factors into her plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“Now I feel I can take the time to decide what things I really want to do and what contributions I want to make during the rest of my career.”

Dr. Kim Perry, associate professor, Department of Restorative Sciences

On her reaction to the promotion:

“I am excited about the opportunities that promotion brings in the area of leadership, research and teaching here at Baylor.”

How the promotion factors into her plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“As a new clinical and translational research scientist … it will allow me the opportunity to network and advance my research in the areas of untreated dental caries in children, behavioral science, community participatory research and health disparities research. …”

Dr. Beverly York, associate professor, Department of Restorative Sciences

On her reaction to the promotion:

“I feel honored and encouraged by this promotion, as it is an indication to me that my efforts are making a difference towards enhancing the quality of education we offer to our students at BCD. It’s exciting to be a part of a health science center that excels in the mission of teaching students the importance of discovery by research and advancing knowledge for excellence in health care. …”

How the promotion factors into her plans at TAMHSC-BCD:

“Students learn through discussion and reflection and my aim will be to continue to encourage students to embrace a life-long love of learning by developing these practices so that they will gain the confidence to be able to conquer difficult problems throughout their practice lifetimes. …”

Comments from Dr. Carolyn Kerins, who will be promoted to associate professor in pediatric dentistry, are not included.
