Get ready to smile, walk and run

It’s time to gear up for Community Dental Care’s 6th Annual Smile Walk and Run, which will be Sept. 10 at Bachman Lake in Dallas. If running doesn’t interest you, walking is an option. Aside from the race, there will still be plenty of fun to go around — with music, refreshments, and bounce houses and balloon making for the kids.

Community Dental Care's Smile Walk and Run 2011 is Sept. 10

This year, each male and female winner of the 10K (6.2 mile) race will receive $100 and each male and female winner of the 5K (3.1 mile) race will receive $75. Trophies for those with the biggest team or best T-shirt design also are up for grabs. Simply finish the race and you’ll be entered to win prizes, including restaurant and retail gift cards. Among the prizes is a free one-night stay at the Choctaw Casino and dinner for two at Butterfields Buffet. Join the TAMHSC-BCD team or register to start your own team.

All proceeds from the event go to Community Dental Care, the state’s largest non-profit provider of routine and preventive oral health care. The organization works to provide dental treatment to children, seniors and patients in need, including Dallas’ homeless population and domestic abuse victims. Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry students even perform clinical rotations through their centers.

Community Dental Care fundraisers take on special significance this year. Its funding from the City of Dallas was decreased from $675,000 to $96,000 in 2010 and this year, the organization could completely lose this funding. As a result, Community Dental Care will see 400 less children.

Most recently, in June, one of Community Dental Care’s mobile dental units was completely destroyed in a fire, which means the organization will have to find a way to provide care to its Seagoville, Texas, patients with its remaining unit.
