Kerney Laday Scholarship recipient sets sights on oral surgery
Diego Hurtado, D3, recently received the Kerney Laday Scholarship, a $9,000 award which will be put toward the 2011-2012 academic year.
Hurtado’s long-term plans include returning to New Mexico to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery. To meet this goal, Hurtado plans to enter an oral and maxillofacial residency program after he earns his dental degree.
Before entering Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry in fall 2008, Hurtado attended the New Mexico School of Medicine for two years. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of New Mexico in 2005.
The Kerney Laday Scholarship is not the first honor Hurtado has received during his time at TAMHSC-BCD. He has also been named to the Dean’s Honor List and Odontological Honor Society. Hurtado has served as a class officer, Student Council member, predental applicant mentor and student consultant to the dental school admissions committee.
Hurtado has a stake in the future of TAMHSC-BCD through his participation as the only student member of the BCD Alumni Association board of directors and as one of just four students on the reaccreditation steering committee.
