Swinney receives B.J. Long Memorial Scholarship

Lisa SwinneySenior dental hygiene student Lisa Swinney received the B.J. Long Memorial Scholarship from the Dallas Dental Hygienists’ Society on Feb. 17. Laurie Morgan Inglis, society president, presented the $500 award during the organization’s Senior Night at the college.

The scholarship is given in memory of Long, a 1980 Caruth School of Dental Hygiene graduate and longtime member of DDHS. It recognizes a senior dental hygiene student based on grade point average, leadership qualities, professional goals and financial need. Students also must have a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Swinney’s letter of support came from Lisa Harper Mallonee, associate professor of dental hygiene.

“Lisa’s congenial disposition and caring nature as a student and a future dental health care provider truly amaze me,” said Mallonee. “She is wise beyond her years. Her compassion for life and all those she is involved with both professionally as a student and personally is conveyed through her conscientious daily efforts.”

Senior Night is an annual event hosted by DDHS. Dental hygiene alumna Lana Crawford spoke to students this year about their upcoming clinical and written examinations, graduation and clinical practice.
